A Plan for Every Pain, Injury, and Setback

Pain doesn’t have to be part of your daily life. Whether you’re dealing with a nagging ache that won’t go away, recovering from surgery, or working to get back to the sport or activity you love, our team at CJ Physical Therapy & Pilates is here to help.

We treat patients throughout Portsmouth and the greater Seacoast NH area, from active adults managing sports injuries to those navigating chronic pain, post-surgical recovery, or the natural changes that come with aging. No two bodies are the same, so no two treatment plans look the same either. Every visit starts with understanding what’s actually going on, not just masking the symptom.

Below is a detailed look at the conditions and concerns we treat every day. Don’t see your specific issue listed? Reach out, chances are we can still help.

Conditions We Treat

We treat the whole picture, not just the symptom. From back and neck pain to sports injuries and healthy aging, we use proven, hands-on techniques built around your body and your goals, so you get lasting relief, not just a quick fix.

LOWER BACK

Back pain is one of the most common reasons people seek physical therapy, and for good reason: it can affect nearly everything you do, from sitting at a desk to lifting groceries. We treat the full range, from a one-time strain to chronic, recurring pain that's been building for years.

🔸 Back Pain (Acute, Chronic & Recurrent)
🔸 Sciatica & Leg Pain
🔸 Herniated & Bulging Discs
🔸 Degenerative Disc Disease
🔸 Facet & SI Joint Pain
🔸 Spinal Stenosis & Spondylolisthesis
🔸 Back Strain
🔸 Core Weakness

NECK

Neck pain often starts small, a bit of stiffness after a long day, and builds into something that limits how far you can turn your head or triggers headaches. We help identify the root cause, whether it's postural, an old injury, or something more complex like a pinched nerve.

🔸 Neck Pain (Acute, Chronic & Stiff Neck)
🔸 Whiplash
🔸 Cervical Radiculopathy & Pinched Nerve
🔸 Pain Running Into the Arm
🔸 Tension & Cervicogenic Headaches
🔸 Arthritis of the Neck
🔸 Dizziness Related to Neck Problems

SHOULDER

The shoulder is one of the most mobile joints in the body, which also makes it one of the most prone to injury. We work with patients recovering from tears, managing chronic impingement, or trying to simply reach overhead again without pain.

🔸 Shoulder Pain & Instability
🔸 Rotator Cuff Tears & Tendinopathy
🔸 Shoulder Impingement
🔸 Frozen Shoulder
🔸 Shoulder Bursitis
🔸 Labral Tears
🔸 Arthritis
🔸 Pain Reaching Overhead

ELBOW & ARM

From repetitive strain injuries like tennis and golfer's elbow to nerve-related pain and numbness, we help patients regain full use of their arms without compensating or favoring the other side.

🔸 Tennis & Golfer's Elbow
🔸 Elbow & Biceps Tendonitis
🔸 Arm Pain
🔸 Pinched Nerve
🔸 Numbness & Tingling

WRIST & HAND

Hand and wrist pain can make even simple daily tasks, typing, cooking, holding a cup of coffee, unexpectedly difficult. We treat the full spectrum, from repetitive strain conditions like carpal tunnel to arthritis and post-injury stiffness.

🔸 Carpal Tunnel Syndrome
🔸 Wrist Pain & Tendonitis
🔸 Thumb Arthritis
🔸 Trigger Finger
🔸 Hand Pain
🔸 Numbness & Tingling

HIP

Hip pain can quietly limit your life, making stairs harder, walks shorter, and getting comfortable at night a challenge. We treat everything from labral tears and impingement to the tendinopathy and bursitis that build up over years of activity.

🔸 Hip Pain & Arthritis
🔸 Hip Impingement (FAI) & Labral Tear
🔸 Hip & Gluteal Tendinopathy
🔸 Hip Bursitis
🔸 Groin Pain & Hip Flexor Strain
🔸 Piriformis Syndrome
🔸 Pain Walking or Climbing Stairs

Knee pain affects people at every stage of life, from young athletes recovering from an ACL tear to those managing arthritis or preparing for a knee replacement. We build individualized rehab plans that meet you exactly where you are.

🔸 ACL Rehabilitation
🔸 Post-Surgical & Total Knee Replacement Recovery

FOOT & ANKLE

Every step starts here, so foot and ankle pain has a way of affecting your whole body's mechanics. We treat common culprits like plantar fasciitis and Achilles tendonitis, along with sprains, structural issues, and chronic pain that hasn't responded to rest alone.

🔸 Plantar Fasciitis & Heel Pain
🔸 Achilles Tendonitis & Tendinopathy
🔸 Ankle Sprains & Pain
🔸 Foot Pain & Flat Feet
🔸 Posterior Tibial Tendon Dysfunction
🔸 Metatarsalgia & Bunion Pain

BALANCE & MOBILITY

Feeling unsteady on your feet is more common than people think, and it's not something you have to just accept. Our Pilates-based rehab approach is especially effective here, building strength and control that translates directly into everyday confidence.

🔸 Balance Problems & Fall Prevention
🔸 Walking Difficulties
🔸 Mobility Limitations
🔸 General Deconditioning

HEALTHY AGING & LONGEVITY

Getting older doesn't mean giving up your independence or the activities you love. We work with patients to rebuild strength, improve mobility, and address the small changes that can add up, before they become bigger limitations.

🔸 Stiffness with Aging
🔸 Loss of Strength & Mobility
🔸 Difficulty Getting Up from the Floor
🔸 Difficulty Walking & Fear of Falling
🔸 Maintaining Independence

SPORTS & ACTIVE LIFESTYLE

Whether you're training for a race, hitting the golf course, or just trying to keep up with pickleball season, we help active adults across the Seacoast get back to what they love, and stay there.

🔸 Pickleball, Golf & Tennis Injuries
🔸 Gym-Related Injuries

🔸 Difficulty Hiking or Exercising
🔸 Difficulty Sleeping Because of Pain

See What Our Patients Have to Say

Every story is different. Every result is real. See what our patients are saying about their experience with us in Portsmouth, NH.

I have been going to CJ Physical Therapy & Pilates since January. My issues were with my left knee and partially torn left rotator cuff. From my initial consultation with Dr Holly and Dr Maddie through all my PT sessions they have truly made a difference with both my knee and shoulder pain. They take the time to explain every exercise and ensure your form is correct when performing each exercise. Additionally they also provide a home exercise program that is easy to follow with videos! I would highly recommend CJ Physical Therapy & Pilates

I have had a great experience at CJ PT. I experienced some lower back pain. The team there (shout out to Dr. Melissa) did a thorough evaluation, explained to me what was going on with my back in terms I could understand, and led me through stretches and exercises that alleviated the condition. I especially like that when we discussed an exercise, a video instruction of the exercise showed up on my PT app before I got home so I could perform the exercise properly. The staff is warm and welcoming and the follow up is solid. Highly recommend.
