Herniated/Bulging Disc Treatment in Portsmouth, NH

Find the real cause of your herniated disc pain and fix it for good, without pills, procedures, or surgery.

A Herniated Disc Doesn't Have to Mean Surgery

A herniated or bulging disc diagnosis can feel scary, but the disc itself is rarely the whole story. Studies consistently show that many people walk around with a herniated disc visible on an MRI and feel no pain at all. What actually determines whether you’re in pain isn’t just the herniation. It’s how your spine is moving, and loading, around it.

That’s why we don’t treat the MRI. We treat the movement patterns and mobility restrictions that are aggravating the disc in the first place, and build a plan specific to your body that gets you out of pain and keeps you there. This is the same specialized, one-on-one approach we use across all of our physical therapy programs.

Common Symptoms We Treat

If any of this sounds familiar, the good news is that most bulging discs respond very well to the right kind of movement based care, even long standing cases. You can also see our full list of conditions we treat for related issues like hip, knee, neck, or shoulder pain.

Mechanical vs. Chemical Pain:
Why It Matters for Your Disc

Not all disc pain is the same, and treating it the wrong way can waste months of your time. Before we build your plan, we figure out exactly which kind of pain you have.

Mechanical Pain (Most Common)

About 70 to 80% of back and disc pain is mechanical, caused by mobility restrictions and faulty movement patterns, not inflammation. If your pain changes with position, eases with walking or stretching, or shifts depending on how you move, it's very likely mechanical. This type responds extremely well to precisely prescribed corrective exercise, which is where we focus first.

Chemical Pain (Less Common)

If your pain is constant, feels hot or inflamed, and doesn't change no matter how you move or rest, it may be chemical, driven by your body's inflammatory response getting "stuck." This type needs a different approach, like Regenerative Therapy, before movement based work can be effective. The Gray Area

Sometimes a herniated disc irritates nearby nerves and muscles, causing a mix of both. Understanding which category you fall into, and adjusting your plan accordingly, is the difference between a quick fix that doesn't last and a plan that actually works.

Our Specific Methods for Herniated Discs

McKenzie Method (MDT) A movement based diagnostic and treatment system used to identify exactly which directions and positions relieve your disc related pain, then build your recovery plan around them. This is often the fastest way to find out what’s actually driving your symptoms.

Regenerative Therapy (EMTT/Shockwave) For disc related inflammation that needs extra help calming down, we use non-invasive regenerative technology as a natural alternative to cortisone injections, allowing movement based treatment to work sooner.

Dry Needling Used to release muscle tension and guarding around the spine that often accompanies disc irritation, reducing pain and improving mobility.

Pilates-Based Rehab Once acute pain resolves, we build core stability and movement control to protect your spine long term and reduce the chance of re-injury or re-herniation.
