- UNDERSTANDING YOUR ARTHRITIS
An Arthritis Diagnosis Isn't a Life Sentence
Hearing “arthritis,” “bone-on-bone,” or “degeneration” is scary, and for a lot of people it becomes the moment they start shrinking their life around it. The stairs get avoided. The hikes get shorter. Golf, pickleball, or getting up and down off the floor quietly becomes something they just don’t do anymore.
Here’s what most people aren’t told: arthritis may be part of getting older, but becoming fragile doesn’t have to be. Your X-ray or MRI is only one piece of the puzzle. Plenty of people with significant joint changes on imaging have little to no pain, and plenty of people with a lot of pain have relatively mild findings. That mismatch matters, because it means the picture on a scan often isn’t the whole story of what’s actually driving your symptoms, or what you’re still capable of.
Treating arthritis like an automatic stop sign is why so many people cycle through rest, medication, and injections without ever getting back to the activities they actually miss, using the same specialized, one-on-one approach we use across all of our physical therapy programs.
- WHAT ARTHRITIS FEELS LIKE
Common Symptoms We Treat
- Joint pain or stiffness that's worse first thing in the morning or after sitting still
- Aching in the knees, hips, or other joints that flares with stairs, walking, or standing
- A sense that a joint is "grinding," catching, or less stable than it used to be
- Swelling or soreness after activity, even activity you used to tolerate easily
- Pain that's led you to quietly cut back on hiking, golf, pickleball, or other things you love
- Arthritis that's already been treated with rest, injections, or medication, but keeps limiting you
If any of this sounds familiar, it usually means the actual contributors to your pain haven’t been fully identified yet, not that you’re out of options.
- OUR APPROACH
Your X-Ray Is One Piece of the Puzzle, Not the Whole Picture
Arthritis is easy to misread because a scan can make it look like the story is already over. We start by figuring out what’s actually contributing to your pain and limiting your movement, then build your plan around that.
Load and Movement Tolerance (Where We Focus First)
How a joint is loaded and moved day to day plays a huge role in how it feels, often more than what shows up on imaging. If your symptoms shift with activity, ease with certain positions, or flare with others, that's a strong sign we can influence them directly through targeted movement and load management. This is usually the fastest path to feeling more capable again, and why generic advice like "just strengthen it" often falls short: the strategy has to match your specific joint and pattern.
Structural Findings That Aren't the Whole Story
"Bone-on-bone," joint space narrowing, or degenerative changes on a scan sound final, but these findings are extremely common in people with little to no pain at all. A scan can confirm arthritis is present. It can't tell us how much of your pain it's actually responsible for, or what you're still capable of doing.
When Inflammation Is Part of the Picture
Sometimes an arthritic joint is genuinely inflamed and irritated, and needs help calming down before movement-based work can take full effect. Identifying this piece, and addressing it directly, keeps your progress from stalling out.
- HOW WE TREAT IT
Our Specific Methods for Arthritis
Mechanical Diagnosis & Therapy (MDT) A movement-based assessment system used to identify exactly which positions, movements, and loads change your symptoms, so your plan is built around what actually helps your joint, not a generic protocol.
Regenerative Therapy (EMTT/Shockwave) For arthritic joints where inflammation or degeneration is limiting progress, we use non-invasive regenerative technology that works with your body’s own healing response, a natural alternative to cortisone injections that helps movement-based treatment take hold sooner.
Dry Needling Used to release muscle tension and guarding around an arthritic joint, which often builds up as the body tries to protect it, reducing pain and restoring mobility.
Pilates-Based Rehab Once symptoms are more settled, we build strength and stability around the joint to improve load tolerance long term, so you can keep doing the activities you care about with less risk of flaring back up.
